Owl monkeys communicate within their families and between families using distinctive calls. They express alarm and appreciation using chirps, trills and purrs. Louder vocalizations, for example, hoots (to attract mates), and resonant whoops (to ward off rivals at territorial boundaries) are used to communicate messages to outsiders.
